Teaching your child to memorize material: Memory tricks are worth learning. There are a lot of books about memory strategies. Check one out at the library and teach the strategies to your child.
Here are some strategies that work well:
1. Have your child make up words (acronyms) or sentences (acrostics) to help him remember a long list of items. These are fun for children - the sillier they are the better.
For example, to memorize the names of the seasons your child might learn the word SAWS (Summer, Autumn, Winter, Spring).
Many of us who took piano lessons, learned the sentence, Every Good Boy Does Fine, to memorize the names of the lines on the music staff, EGBDF.
2. Visualization (making a picture in your mind) is also a good technique for children. If they are learning the names of the continents, have them get up and pretend to write the name of each continent, on a different wall in the house. After they have finished, have them sit down and picture those names written on the walls. Then, have them pretend to walk through the house reading the names as they go. It really works.
For spelling, use visualization by having your child picture the word written in a box above his head. Tell him to look at each letter. Have him spell the word forward and backwards. If your child has really visualized the word, he will be able to do this.
