Meeting all your child’s needs:
Maslow’s Hierarchy identifies five levels of needs. It is good to keep these in mind when you work with any child.
Each level must be met before you can be successful at the next level.
Level 1. Physiological - At this level we are only concerned with getting our physical needs met. We are concerned with having enough to eat, proper clothing and a place to live.
Level 2. Safety and Security - Before we can begin to have any relationships we need to feel physically safe and secure that we will be cared for.
Level 3. Love and Belonging - Before we can move beyond this level we need to be part of a family and have friends.
Level 4. Self Esteem - At this level we are learning to feel good about who we are and confident in our own ability to take care of ourselves
Level 5. Self Actualization. - At the highest level we can concentrate on developing our minds through education. We can pursue personal interests and goals.

What is it?

Definition

A person is being bullied when he/she is exposed, repeatedly and over time, to negative actions on the part of one or more other persons. Negative action is when a person intentionally inflicts injury or discomfort upon another person, through physical contact, through words or in other ways. Note that bullying is both overt and covert behaviors.

The following are examples of bullying behaviors. Remember, bullying is a pattern of behavior that is repeated over time against the same person(s) with a noted power differential.

  • Saying hurtful and unpleasant things
  • Making fun of others
  • Using mean and hurtful nicknames
  • Completely overlooking someone
  • Deliberately excluding someone from a group of friends

A Mother's Tips

Talking to others about your child's disability

Experience is the best teacher, as the saying goes-and one of its big lessons is how to communicate about your child's disability. For Kathy Graves, the learning began when her son Sam, then 1, was diagnosed with cerebral palsy (CP).
"He was born on his due date and was healthy," she recalls. "Then he contracted meningitis when he was a week old." At the time, Sam seemed to recover and was reaching all his developmental milestones. "But at six months, he didn't crawl," Kathy remembers.
