skill and it requires a lot of practice for a child to become a good reader. Teachers will encourage you to read to your child every night or have your child read 20 minutes every night and I applaud any family who can do this. It does help. However, if reading becomes a chore instead of a pleasure you are going to lose this very important battle.
Here are a few tips to make reading more enjoyable.
1. If your child needs to read material that is too difficult for him:
- read it with him and paraphrase as you go along to make sure he understands what he is reading.
-get a book written at an easier reading level that covers the same material.
2. If you have a child who doesn't’t like to read books:
-get him to read something else until you find the book he wants to read.
-use E-mail to get your child reading.
-get children’s magazines from the library and leave them around the house along with comic books, calendars, and anything else that needs to be read to be understood.
-(if you are desperate) - have him read catalogs and learn to order items.
3. Read and comment. While you read the newspaper, comment about interesting articles. “Hey, listen to this!” Have your child read the article with you.
