The Seven Principles of Positive Parenting

Positive Parenting asks you to shift your thinking away from consequences and replace consequences with prevention and teaching. Understanding the principles will assist you in using behavior management strategies that are focused on building skills for self management where a child will value and respect his role in the family.
Respect and Dignity
Children should be treated with respect and dignity. They are our future. Children will learn the art of respectful interactions when adults in their lives continually model respect and dignity.
Preventative
Children need help to avoid circumstances that tend to trigger behavior problems. We need to help set up environments that remove the need to use problem behaviors.
Educational
Children need to learn replacement behaviors. Instead of punishing your child for using the wrong behavior we need to focus on teaching your child the correct behavior.
Choice
Children need to learn to make responsible choices. Behavior management strategies should be designed to give your child some choice and control over his/her life.
Gentle
Children should be treated gently. Behavior management strategies should never cause physical pain or mental distress.
On-going
Children need to learn new skills as they grow and change. Behavior management strategies need to change as the child matures and his/her needs change.
Guiding Principles, Continued
Individualized
Children need to be seen as individuals with unique strengths and needs. Behavior management strategies should be designed to fit the needs of each child. One size does not fit all.

There will be more on each of these points in the weeks to come
