WHAT MAKES CHILDREN FRUSTRATED?
Children will be frustrated if they are worried and adults have not reassured them that everything will be fine. For example, when you go on a trip, if a child has never been there before he will be worried that you do not know how to get there. You need to tell your child that you can handle the situation.
Children will be frustrated if they cannot visualize upcoming
events. Before you start a new activity you need to help children
. understand what is going to happen. You will need to be very explicit or they will be frustrated.
Children will be frustrated if there are too many steps in the transition process. A child can only remember three steps in a new activity. If there is too much to remember they will be anxious. YOUNG CHILDREN AND FRUSTRATION
Frustration leads to anger which leads to aggression. Many times the frustration is c~used from a lack of communication skills. With loving guidance, parents will see children from 2 to 5 years of age decrease their physical aggression as they begin to use words to communicate needs. Knowing what to expect from normally developing children is critical. Here are some tips that can help parents understand what is typical in children:
Young children are self-centered and cannot see another's point of view. Do not expect them to understand how you feel about a situation.
Young children have a hard time thinking about the future or planning for it. Do not expect them to get ready for an activity that is happening the next day.
Young children need concrete guides like picture lists to remember what to do and how to act.
Young children cannot sort out fantasy from reality and get mixed up about what really happened in a situation.
